The hot topic on Twitter right now(if you’re Malawian, anyway) is the (Alleged) passing of our president, Dr. Bingu Wa Mutharika. I don’t know of anyone who will be mourning this particular death, but perhaps that’s a topic for another day.
Bingu’s (alleged) death has come about at a time when he is hugely unpopular. Quite a surprising change in the tide of his affairs, because there once was a time not so long ago when he was very popular, even in international circles. He was Malawi’s miracle worker. He managed to turn Malawi into one of the fastest growing economies in the world! Fancy that.
But obviously this successful streak was short-lived. Malawi’s economy has steadily regressed, there are fuel,forex, even sugar shortages…ironic..cos we MAKE sugar. But I digress.
Most of these shortages, and pretty much all the suffering Malawi is going through right now, is down to one…
